TYLER, Texas — Jay Griffin IV picked up a preseason honor on Tuesday when he was named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Preseason Watch List.  It’s the first preseason honor for Griffin IV, who is a junior receiver.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Griffin tied for second on the Lobos in 2018 with 21 receptions, covering 168 yards.  The speedy Griffin was a revelation as a freshman, becoming the first Lobo in seven years to record a 100-yard receiving game, and catching four touchdown passes and rushing for another.  Griffin IV also excelled for the Lobo track team, winning hte outdoor 200-meter and earning all-conference in both indoors and outdoors.  During Spring practice, he went to practice in the morning, raced into the locker room and changed into his running gear, went around Dreamstyle Stadium and into the track where he won the 100 and 200-meter races for the Lobo track team in a home meet.

Griffin IV is a multifaceted receiver who can also return kicks and punts, and run the ball as well.  He is one of 42 to be named to the preseason watch list, and one of four Mountain West student-athletes, joining JoJo White of Hawai’i, Juwan Washington of San Diego State and Darren Woods, Jr. of UNLV.
