UNM leads MW in Scholar-Athletes for 8th Straight Year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Mountain West offices have released it’s 2018-19 Scholar-Athlete teams, and for the eighth consecutive year, The University of New Mexico leads the conference, this time with a total of 135 MW Scholar-Athletes.  The 135 was the most for UNM since the 2015-16 season, when 145 student-athletes were honored.
 
The MW Scholar-Athlete award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
 
Six different programs either led the league or tied for the league lead within their respective sports: football, men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s soccer.  UNM’s football program had a program record 14 honorees, and that total was the most of any football program since the 2005-06 season when BYU had 20 honorees. 
 
New Mexico’s men’s golf team had six of the league’s 16 honorees in the sport, and the men’s tennis team had six of the league’s 17 honorees in that sport.
