Conference Champs Sign Canadian Junior Raul Dobai

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Ben Dunbar, head coach of the 2019 Mountain West regular season champions, has announced the signing of Raul Dobai of Vancouver, British Columbia for the 2019-20 season.  Dobai joins a team that returns four of its top six players, and fits into an already stellar recruiting class joining blue chip prospect from England Alexander Maggs.

The right-hander from Vancouver played under the tutelage of the coaches at Tennis Canada on the junior circuit, and had tremendous success, topped by finishing fourth in singles at the Canadian Nationals in 2018.  He also made it to the semifinals of the Canadian Nationals in doubles in 2018.

He has won a pair of ITF G5 titles, winning the singles title at the Panorama Junior ITF in Canada and the doubles title at the Victoria ITF.  He also was the British Columbia Provincial Champion.  He also has picked up wins over several ranked NCAA players who are on current rosters nationwide, including a win over Tommy Mylnikov, who played at No. 1 singles for Texas Tech last year.

Dunbar, who led UNM to its first title since 2015, is excited for the big-serving righty.  “We are excited to welcome Raul to the Lobo family.  He follows in the footsteps of the great list of Canadians who hail from Vancouver and have represented the Lobos,” said Dunbar.  “We are confident that Raul will have an immediate impact and that his best tennis is ahead of him.  We really believe that the sky is the limit for this young man and we are excited to help him develop in any way we can! Go Lobos!”

Earlier this month the Lobos were named as one of the teams to play in the ITA Kick-off Classic, playing in the Waco Regional.
