Lobos Earn Seven All-America Honors at NCAA Outdoor Championships

USTFCCCA RELEASE

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Following a successful weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in which The University of New Mexico women’s team finished a program-best eighth in the team standings with a program-best 27 points, the Lobos acquired seven All-American selections as announced by the USTFCCCA on Monday.

Weini Kelati, Adva Cohen and Charlotte Prouse earned two nods each while Ednah Kurgat earned one.

Kelati led the Lobos with two first team distinctions after winning the 10,000-meter and finishing fifth in the 5000-meter. The sophomore became the first Lobo to win the NCAA title in the 10,000-meter event as well as earned her first NCAA title.  Her time of 33:10.84 was also significant in that it set a facility record by 20.7 seconds. Kelati become just the second Lobo to win an NCAA title on the women’s side and the third outdoor title by a New Mexico runner in the last four years with Josh Kerr winning the 1500-meter in 2017. Two days later, Kelati ran 15:54.46 to finish fifth in the 5,000-meter final to earn a second First Team All-American selection.

In her career thus far, Kelati has garnered nine- two in cross country, four indoor and three outdoor. Of those nine, eight are first team and five were from this year alone.

For a consecutive year, Prouse produced a runner-up finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase after running a personal best time of 9:44.50, which ranks fourth all-time in program history, for a first team distinction. A short while later, the junior picked up a Second Team All-American award after finishing 15th in the 5000-meter. The Canadian now has nine all-America nods in her career, eight as a Lobo, her fifth first team distinction and her fifth all-America honor this season.

Like Prouse, Cohen ran in both the steeplechase and the 5000-meter in Austin, finishing the four-day championship with a First Team All-American award and an Honorable Mention status. Cohen placed fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 9:46.36 to earn her first NCAA All-America honor and picked up honorable mention in the 5000-meter.

Kurgat concluded her season with a Second Team All-American nod after running the 10,000-meter, in which she finished ninth at 33:34.67. The Lobo picked up her eighth all-America honor, her second on the second team, and her fourth of the season.

On the year, the UNM women’s team has collected 13 all-America honors between indoor and outdoor track, with eight of those coming in the form of first team.
