ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— University of New Mexico sophomore outfielder Andrea Howard has been selected to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team as announced by CoSIDA on Thursday.

The program by CoSIDA recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom and separately recognizes baseball and softball honorees.

Howard was selected to the District 7 first team, which includes representatives from the states of Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. There is a total of eight districts in Division I.

The Albuquerque native was one of 11 student-athletes selected in the district and was one of four Mountain West selections.

As a first-team academic all-district selection, Howard now advances to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees selected in June.

The sophomore Lobo earns the honor carrying a 4.05 GPA while majoring in biology.

This is not the first academic accolade that Howard has acquired this year after being named a UNM scholar-athlete at the Lobo Scholar-Athlete Banquet in late April and was named to the UNM All-Academic Team as the top academic performer on the softball team.

Howard is the fifth Lobo softball player to earn an academic all-district distinction but the second to be selected for the CoSIDA award since Brandi Heimburg was named to the first team in 2015.

On the field, Howard started in 46 games and tallied 24 hits, of which nine were doubles, two triples and three went for home runs. The outfielder accounted for 25 runs and 15 RBI while registering 24 walks and an on-base percentage of .327. In the outfield, Howard recorded 97 putouts, the third-most putouts on the team.

Howard is tied for second on the team doubles, second in triples as well as walks and tied for fourth in home runs.
