Lobos end 2019 season on high note

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of New Mexico baseball team ended their 2019 season a high note on Saturday afternoon as the Lobos beat San Diego State by a score of 7-4 out at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
 
The win for the Lobos (23-28-1, 11-16-1 MW) gives them the series victory over the Aztecs (32-23, 16-13 MW) after dropping the first game of the weekend series on Thursday night.
 
In the game on Saturday, the Lobos were in control from the outset. After starter Nathaniel Garley navigated himself through the bottom of the first inning, the Lobo offense spotted him a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single up the middle by Tanner Baker.

The Aztecs got a run back in the bottom half to make it a one-run game at 2-1, but that would be as close as they would get to the Lobos the rest of the way out as Garley did not allow another run over the next six innings.
 
In his final start of the season, Garley pitched a career-high 8.0 innings and allowed just the one earned run. In doing so, Garley lowered his season ERA from 5.37 to 4.92.
 
A half inning after SDSU plated their first run, the Lobos scored twice more to make it a 4-1 game. The first run that inning scored on a RBI single to centerfield off the bat of Connor Mang. Jared Mang later scored on a wild pitch as well.
 
In the fifth, UNM grabbed a four-run lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Reese O’Farrell that scored Hayden Schilling. In the ninth, C. Mang added two more RBIs to his total and gave the Lobos a 7-1 lead as he singled home Derek Marshall Jr. and Micah Pietla-Wiggs.
 
The Aztecs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring the game to its final score of 7-4. A trio of senior relievers pitched in the ninth as Chad Smith, Blake Walden and Malachi Emond all made their final appearances as Lobos.
