Lobos Through One Round of NCAA Regional
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional competition hosted by the University of Louisville on Monday. Senior Sean Carlon leads the squad after round one as he sits in a tie for 26th out of 75 competitors.

Carlon, who ultimately finished second at the MW Championships after a three-hole playoff, registered a one over, 72 in the round with the help of a team-leading five birdies, tied for second across the competition. The senior is also tied for second in both par-3 and par-5 scoring as he is averaging 3.00 (E) and 4.00 (-3), respectively. Carlon sits just six strokes out of first place and three strokes out of the top-10.
Coming in three strokes behind was freshman Sam Choi who recorded a 75 (+4) to tie for 53rd. Choi began the competition with a birdie on his first hole (hole 10) and went on to card two more birdies on 13th and 17th holes. Sophomore and 2019 Mountain West Champion Galven Green followed by one stroke as he shot a five over, 76 to finish the round in 59th. Green led the squad in pars as he notched 10 on the day.
Freshman Roy Choi and redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair each posted scores of eight over, 79 to finish round one tied for 72nd. Sinclair shot three birdies on the day while Roy Choi carded two.
As a team, New Mexico finished round one in 13th place with a team score of 302 (+18). The squad trails 12th-place Southern Illinois by just one stroke and 11th-place Jacksonville State by two. The Lobos combined for 16 birdies in the round to tie for third across the competition while they performed their best on par-5s, averaging 4.60 (-6) tie for fourth in the category.
Auburn leads the tournament after round one as it shot eight under, 276 and had two competitors complete the round in the top-10. Oklahoma State holds second with a score of 278 (-6) while Baylor and host Louisville are tied for third with scores of 278 (-4). Louisville’s Matthias Schmid leads on the individual leaderboard with a five under, 66 while four competitors are tied for second with a four under, 67.
Round two of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional competition is set to begin on Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. MT with the Lobos teeing off at 7:20 a.m. on the first hole.
