Women’s Golf Heads to Silverado Showdown

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team is set to compete at the Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Colorado and Oregon this Sunday, April 7 – Tuesday, April 9 in Napa, Calif. The tournament will take place at the par-72, 6,192-yard North Course at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.

The field for the Silverado Showdown consists of 18 squads including four Mountain West opponents: Colorado State, San Diego State, San José State and UNLV. The rest of the field is made up of California, Colorado, Iowa State, Northwestern, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Francisco, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Three of the teams competing at the tournament are Golfstat top-10 ranked teams including No. 1 USC, No. 4 Stanford and No. 9 UCLA.

Of the Mountain West competitors, San José State currently leads the conference with an average score of 291.00 over 22 rounds. UNLV follows in second with a 294.48 average in 27 rounds while Colorado State and San Diego State hold the third and fourth spots, respectively. The Rams are averaging 297.79 (24 rounds) while the Aztecs sit closely behind with a 297.74 average (19 rounds). So far this season, UNM is averaging a score of 304.67 in 24 rounds as it is ninth in the Mountain West.

Senior Darian Zachek leads for New Mexico individually in the conference shooting 4.33 vs. par and averaging 76.08, putting her 30th overall. Senior Emma Edwards sits just three spots behind in 33rd shooting 4.57 vs. par with an average score of 76.29.

The Lobos enter the tournament coming off a 10th-place finish at the PING /ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State on March 29-31. Edwards had an outstanding performance at the tournament as her score of 215 (-1) put her in 13th to mark her top finish of the season. Edwards came in third place in par-4 scoring across the competition with an average of 3.93 (-2) and she led UNM in birdies with 10.

The first round of the Silverado Showdown will tee off on Sunday at 7:00 a.m. MT and will be followed by round two on Monday and round three on Tuesday.
