Carlon, Lobos Tied for First at MW Championships
TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is tied for first after round one of the 2019 Mountain West Championships on Friday while senior Sean Carlon is tied for first individually. The Lobos are sitting even with Colorado State as both squads registered a nine under, 279 on the day.

Carlon was outstanding for the Lobos on Friday as he shot a five under, 67 with the help of six birdies and a second-hole eagle to make him one of just five competitors to card an eagle in the round. The senior led the squad in par-5 scoring as his average of 3.75 (-5) tied for first in the category while he and sophomore Galven Green each averaged 2.75 (-1) on par-3s. Carlon is tied for first with just one competitor, Fresno State’s Alex Lee.
Green came in three strokes behind as he carded back-to-back birdies to start the round and finished with a two under, 70 to put him in a tie for 13th. Green averaged 4.50 (-2) on par-5s and he was consistent throughout the round as he registered five birdies and 11 pars on the day.
Freshman Sam Choi and freshman Roy Choi each shot a 71 (-1) in the round to tie for 20th. Sam Choi led for the Lobos in par-4 scoring with a 3.80 (-2) average while Roy Choi came in second for UNM in the category with a 4.00 (E) average. Both Lobos carded four birdies while Roy Choi registered 12 pars to Sam Choi’s 11.
Speaking of pars, freshman Ignacio Arcaya shot 17 on the day to tie him for first in the category. Arcaya shot a score of one over, 73 as he finished round one tied for 34th. The freshman tied with teammate Sam Choi in par-3 scoring as they each averaged an even 3.00.
As a team, the Lobos combined for 60 pars and 19 birdies in the round and are tied for first in par-3 scoring with a team-average of 2.95 (-1).
It’s a close competition on the team leaderboard as there is just a five-stoke difference between the first and eighth-place spots following round one. While New Mexico and Colorado State hold first with scores of 279 (-9), third-place Boise State trails by just one stroke with a score of 280 (-8) and fourth-place San Diego State trails by two with a 281 (-7). UNLV and Fresno State are tied for fifth with scores of six under, 282, while Nevada and Wyoming hold seventh and eighth, respectively, with scores of 283 (-5) and 284 (-4).
Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State each have two individuals in the top-10 after round one, while UNM, Fresno State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming each have one.
