Kelati Named MW Women's Track Athlete of Week

MW RELEASE
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—
After breaking the APU Stadium and Bryan Clay Invitational meet records, sophomore Weini Kelati has been selected as the Mountain West Female Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

The selection marks the third weekly honor for the Virginia native this season after earning the award twice during the indoor season (Jan. 29 and Feb. 12). It is however the first outdoor weekly honor of her career.

Kelati’s accolade comes after running 15:23.46 in the 5000-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational to set the meet and track record by 15.96 seconds. The sophomore finished 7.55 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher, fellow Lobo Adva Cohen, to take the event win in a race that was listed among FloTrack’s Best Races of the Week. Runners in the field included Caroline Kurgat, Lauren Gregory, and Allie Ostrander as well as runners from some of the top-teams in the country in No. 1 Arkansas, No. 6 Florida State and No. 7 Alabama.

Her time currently holds as the fastest time this season among NCAA runners according to the TFRRS Outdoor Combined Qualifying List.

Kelati and the Lobos return to competition this Friday and Saturday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational.
