AZUSA, Calif.— The University of New Mexico distance runners showed once again why the Lobos are touted as among the best runners in the nation on Thursday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational held at the Cougar Athletic Stadium on Azusa Pacific’s East Campus, led by record-breaking performances by sophomores Weini Kelati and Adva Cohen.
Kelati and Cohen finished first and second in the top heat of the 5000-meter run with both breaking the Bryan Clay Invitational and APU Stadium records.
The Lobos dominated the race as Kelati cruised to the win in heat one with a personal-best 15:23.46, followed 7.55 seconds later by Cohen at 15:31.01. Cohen finished 9.44 seconds ahead of the third-place runner. The previous record was 15:39.42 run by Marielle Hall in 2018, which the Lobos shattered by 15.96 seconds and 8.41 seconds, respectively.
Based on the latest TFRRS results in the 5000-meter, the times run by Kelati and Cohen would rank first and second, respectively, in the NCAA this season.
UNM had many notable results on the afternoon, with several familiar suspects posting top times in their events.
In another standout performance in the 5000-meter run, Charlotte Prouse won her heat, heat two, on a finish of 16:16.42, 7.63 seconds in front of the next finisher.
Jonny Glen posted a time of 8:57.20 in the 3000-meter steeplechase to finish fifth out of 105 finishers, improving on his time from the Stanford Invitational in which Glen ran 9:06.60, trimming 9.4 seconds off his time.
In addition, Alexandra Harris finished 15th out of 100 finishers in the women’s steeplechase with a time of 10:29.83.
The Lobos continue competition on Friday morning beginning at 10 a.m. MT. Live results can be found HERE, while the meet will also be streamed on FloTrack, found HERE.
