Hernandez Tong Named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Lobo men’s tennis team is on a pretty good roll, winning eight of its last nine and sitting in first place in the Mountain West.  We success comes honors, and UNM picked up another as Ricky Hernandez Tong was named the Mountain West Player of the Week after a 4-0 week.  He is the second Lobo to pick up the honor this season after Dominic West earned the same last month.

The 2018 Mountain Region Champion, Hernandez Tong led the Lobos to a 4-3 win over Boise State, and then a 4-1 win over Utah State in a battle of unbeaten teams.  Hernandez Tong picked up two doubles wins with partner Stepan Holis, both of which clinched the doubles point.  Hernandez Tong then blitz both of his singles opponents.  Playing at No. 1, he won 24 of 28 games in winning 6-0, 6-1 and then 6-1, 6-2.

The Lobos, 9-6 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain West, have their final two home matches this week with the team hosting UNLV (13-5, 2-2 MW) on Friday at 4 p.m. and then San Diego State (11-8, 2-2 MW) on Sunday at 1 p.m.  That match will serve as Senior Day for UNM, with Hernandez Tong playing in his final home match.  Prior to the match, fans can participate in a men’s tennis tailgate which will serve as a fundraiser for ALS.  Fans that donate at the tailgate will receive a voucher for free admission.  Admission on Friday is free provided fans are in the stadium prior to 5 p.m., and on Sunday it’s $5 which also includes the noon baseball game against Nevada.
