ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Trophies and all-American accolades will be on the line this weekend when The University of New Mexico track and field team concludes its indoor portion of the season at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Representing the Lobos in Birmingham will be Michael Wilson in the 800-meter and Weini Kelati, Ednah Kurgat and Charlotte Prouse in the 3000-meter and 5000-meter.
Kelati and Kurgat enter Friday and Saturday’s races holding some of the top times in the events.
Kurgat (15:14.78) and Kelati (15:15.24) rank first and second, respectively, in the 5000-meter heading into Friday’s race. However, Kurgat and Kelati have only run the 5000-meter once this season, in the first indoor competition of the season on Dec. 1.
Kelati ranks third in the 3000-meter at 8:53.98, a school record, with Kurgat ninth in the event (8:59.78).
Prouse is sixth in the 5000 at 15:26.01 and 10th in the 3000 (9:00.00).
Wilson enters the 800-meter run with the 12th-best time in the country. The semifinals will be held on Friday at 6:27 p.m. MT with the final to be held on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. MT. The top three in each of the two semifinal heats advance to the final as well as the next two fastest times. Wilson is set to run in the second heat.
The women’s 5000-meter race will be on Friday at 7:07 p.m. MT and the 3000-meter race on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. MT.
At the 2018 championships, the women finished tied for 10th with 17 points for their best finish in program history in both points and standing, but are projected to finish higher this time around.
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 4:30 p.m. MT March 8 and starting at 3 p.m. MT on March 9.
