UNM Wins Two Events to Conclude First Weekend of Outdoor Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The University of New Mexico track and field team collected two event wins on Saturday at the Cal State Fullerton Titan Team Challenge and placed three runners in the top 10 of the 800-meter run at the Stanford Invitational to conclude its opening weekend of outdoor competition.
Tanner Battikha won the men’s long jump and Beau Clafton won the javelin event, with UNM also having four runner-up finishers on the day in Fullerton in the men’s 4×400 relay team, Allison Mady in the shot put and Jay Griffin IV in the 200-meter dash.
Battikha won the event with his fourth jump of 23-11 (7.29m), while Clafton twice threw a distance of 196-02 (59.79m) on both his fifth and sixth throws to win the javelin.
Griffin finished second in the 200-meter dash and just 0.04 seconds behind the winner to top the Lobo runners in the event. Griffin also ran the fastest time of all UNM runners in the 100-meter dash with 11.06.
In the shot put, Mady finished second after throwing 46-2.50 (14.08m) on her third throw in the event and in the triple jump, and Cathilee Mullings took second with her best mark of the afternoon coming on her first attempt, recording a mark of 39-2.50 (11.95m).
The men’s 4×400 relay team of Isaac Cole, Ben Parmoon, Bryan Cutler and Griffin ran 3:16.83 to finish second overall.
Parmoon had an impressive individual performance in the 400-meter with a 48.24 to finish third overall and Cole ran 48.90 for a seventh-place result.
Parmoon was just one of four Lobos who finished third, with Gavin Sleeter coming in third in the 800-meter in 1:54.27 and Steffi Jones running 2:14.82 in the women’s 800-meter to take third. Jones also finished third in the 1500-meter run in 4:43.95. In the field events, Ada’ora Chigbo cleared 5-7.25 (1.71m) in the high jump to place third.
UNM added five more top-five finishes with Larimar Rodriguez in the 800-meter (2:15.63), Mackenzie Everett in the 1500-meter with 4:50.72, Shannon Fritz, who tied for fourth in the high jump with 5-5.25 (1.66m) and Ryan Chase, who finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-4.25 (5.29m) that he achieved on his second jump. Aidan Quinn placed fifth in the triple jump on his second attempt effort of 47-1.50 (14.36m).
Up north at Stanford, Michael Wilson finished second in the 800-meter run out of 43 runners with a time of 1:48.77, finishing just 0.48 seconds behind the winner. Max Wharton and Kristian Hansen finished sixth and seventh overall with times of 1:50.14 and 1:50.67, respectively, with Wharton winning his section, to wrap up the Lobo entries at the Stanford Invitational.
The Lobos return to competition next Saturday with their lone home meet of the outdoor season, the Don Kirby Tailwind Classic, on Saturday, April 6.
