UNM Drops Game to CSU on Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—  The University of New Mexico softball team dropped a five-inning game to Colorado State on Saturday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field by the score of 9-1.

UNM tallied just three hits in the game, two of which were doubles by D’Andra DeFlora in the third inning and Sydney Broderick. Broderick’s extra-base hit in the bottom of the fifth was the catcher’s first double of the season and provided the opportunity for the Lobos to get on the board, which came off the bat of Cameryn O’Grady.

After three scoreless innings, the Rams opened up the scoring with two runs on two hits.  A leadoff single advanced to second on a one-out walk. A double to right center by Haley Donaldson scored pinch runner Brooke Polenz from second for the first run. A grounder to O’Grady scored the second run of the inning before Kiana Spencer struck out the Ram batter for the third out of the inning.

Colorado State would add seven more in the top of the seventh to push the game in to run-rule territory.

UNM got on the board in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff double by Broderick. Broderick’s hit was also the first leadoff batter to reach base for UNM. Sydney Townes drew a walk following a full count to put two runners on with no one out. DeFlora reached on a fielder’s choice to advance pinch runner Aleyah Wilbon to third. With two outs in the inning, O’Grady hit a blooper in to left field to plate Wilbon. Lauren Wilmert kept the inning going with a walk to load the bases. A line out to left field ended the game with three left on base.

The Lobos left a total of seven runners on base compared to four for the Rams. UNM once again led in walks, earning four free passes to just three for CSU.

Spencer took the loss in the game, pitching the first 4.0 innings and giving up six hits and four runs, striking out three and walking one.

UNM closes out the series with Colorado State on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
