SDSU offense too much in game two

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A day after dropping a tough-luck pitcher’s duel to San Diego State on Friday night, the University of New Mexico baseball team ended up on the down side of a lopsided offensive day as SDSU scored 19 runs on 20 hits en route to a 19-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.

The offensive outburst by the Aztecs (13-8, 4-2 MW) began from the outset of the game as they plated two runs in the top of the first. Both runs were unearned, but the damage done in that inning proved to be too much to overcome as the Aztecs would go on to score at least one run in each of the first six innings.

During that time, the Lobos (11-11, 3-5 MW) were only able to generate offense themselves in the fourth inning. In that frame, Connor Mang led off with a triple to right-centerfield. A batter later, Tanner Baker went the other way to left field for a ground-rule double, scoring Mang. Following a groundout, Ediberto Reyes traded placed with Baker as he doubled to left field to make it a 7-2 game at the time.

The Aztecs got both of those runs back in the next half inning, however, on a home run down the right field line. The next inning is where the Aztecs put the game out of reach as they scored six runs in the sixth. Two innings later, four more runs scored to give the Aztecs their 19 runs in the game.

In the bottom of that inning, the Lobos plated their third and final run of the game on a RBI infield single by C. Mang, scoring Hayden Schilling who walked on four pitches to lead off the inning.

As a team, the Lobos had nine hits. Three Lobos would have multi-hit games as Baker, C. Mang and Reyes each had two hits. All three also had an extra-base hit with Baker and Reyes doubling and C. Mang hitting a triple.

The Lobos will look to salvage a game in the series tomorrow afternoon in the finale. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Santa Ana Star Field.
