Dominic West Named MW Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Dominic West, who had a perfect 4-0 week for the Lobos last week against New Mexico State and Drake, was named the Mountain West Men’s Tennis Player of the Week by league officials.  He is the first Lobo to earn the honor this season.

West went a perfect 2-0 in singles play and in doubles as well, leading UNM to a 4-0 win over New Mexico State, although UNM lost to Drake 4-1.  On Saturday against NMSU, he paired with Facundo Bermejo to win 6-4 and clinch the doubles point after trailing 4-1 in the contest.  Then in singles, his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 clinched the 4-0 win.  The next day he teamed again with Facundo to get UNM’s only win in doubles, and then he scored UNM’s only point before the clinch with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.  That win came over Tom Hands, who was ranked No. 72 nationally.

West’s two singles wins on the weekend pushed his season total to 14, tying for the team lead.  UNM and West are back in action at home on Sunday at noon when the Lobos host Cal Poly.  There will be a $5 charge for that match due to the other events going on in the Spring Sports Complex with Lobo softball at home at noon and Lobo baseball at home at Santa Ana Star Field at 1 p.m.
