Sean Carlon Earns Second MW Golfer of the Week Honor

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Senior Sean Carlon of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team has been named Mountain West Golfer of the Week for his performance at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) hosted by Arizona on Monday, March 18 – Tuesday, March 19, the league announced Wednesday. This is Carlon’s second MW Golfer of the Week honor, and his second in four weeks.

Carlon had an outstanding performance at the N.I.T. as he finished eighth out of 84 competitors with a score of nine under, 207 to give him his third top-10 finish of the season. The senior carded the best individual score out of all five of the Mountain West squads competing which included UNM, Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming.

Contributing to Carlon’s success was a personal best second-round total of five under, 67 following a first-round score of four under, 68. Carlon led the squad in both par-3 and par-4 scoring in the tournament, averaging 2.92 (-1) and 3.93 (-2) in each category, respectively, and his performance in par-3 scoring tied him for third across the competition.

New Mexico benefited from Carlon’s work on the par-3, as it finished the competition first in par-3 scoring, averaging 305 (+3). The squad finished sixth in the tournament with a team score of 842 (22).

Carlon also led his team in birdies at the tournament, registering 15 to tie for fourth-most overall. He recorded six birdies in each of the first two rounds followed by three in round three.

It was just one month ago that Carlon earned his first MW Golfer of the Week honor for his performance at the Arizona Intercollegiate where he finished 12th of 80 competitors. Carlon and the rest of the Lobos are looking to continue their momentum they return to action on Saturday, April 6 through Sunday, April 7 at the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M.
