Carlon Tied for Sixth After Two Rounds in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. — Senior Sean Carlon of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first day of the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) in a tie for sixth place after carding six birdies in each of the first two rounds on Monday. As a team, the Lobos are sitting fifth overall out of 16 squads.

Redshirt-junior Mark MacGrath and the other individual competitors of the tournament are playing separately at the Sonoran Showdown also in Tucson, Ariz. at the Sonoran Course.

SONORAN SHOWDOWN ROUNDS 1 & 2 RESULTS

Carlon shot a four under, 68 in round one followed by a team-low score of five under, 67 in round two to bring his combined total to a nine under, 135, just five strokes behind first place. The senior led the team in both par-4 and par-5 scoring, averaging 3.90 (-2) and 4.25 (-6) respectively, and his 12 birdies on the day put him second overall in the category.

Coming in just five strokes behind and finishing the day tied for 15th was freshman Sam Choi who improved his score from a 71 (-1) in round one to a 69 (-3) in round two make his two-round total a four under, 140. Senior Augistin Holé followed by two strokes as he shot a three under, 141 on the day to land in a tie for 20th. Holé shot a first-round eagle to mark the third tournament in a row that he has logged at least one in the competition.

Redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair finished with an even 144 to put him in a tie for 43rd after two rounds with a first-round score of one over, 73 and second-round score of one under, 71. Sinclair shot the most pars on the team as his 27 on the day tied him for first across the competition after two rounds.

Sophomore Galven Green improved seven spots on the leaderboard over the day as he finished tied for 53rd with a score of 146 (+2). Green led the team in par-3 scoring as he averaged 2.88 (-1) and is sitting third overall in that category.  

MacGrath, the Lobos’ sole individual competitor at the Sonoran Showdown, is sitting tied for 11th after two rounds as his first-round score of 71 (+1) and second-round score of 72 (+2) brought his combined total to a 143 (+3) with 22 pars and seven birdies.

The squad finished the day in fifth place with a score of 18 under, 558 after posting a 280 (-8) in round one followed by a 278 (-18) in round two. New Mexico led the competition in par-3 scoring, averaging 2.98 (-1), and tied for first with Mountain West opponent UNLV for the most pars recorded on the day (117).

The Lobos trail fourth-place UNLV, which shot a 557 (-19), by just one stroke and third-place Oklahoma, which shot a 556 (-20), by two. Arizona State holds first place in the competition as its low second-round score of 263 (-25) brings its combined score to a 33 under, 543, six strokes ahead of second-place USC.
