Lobos drop series finale at Nevada

RENO, Nev. – The University of New Mexico baseball team rallied in the middle innings, but ultimately lost the rubber game of the weekend series at Nevada as the Wolf Pack came away with a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Weir Field.

In the series finale, Nevada (10-8, 3-3 MW) raced out to a 5-0 lead through three innings thanks to two runs in the second and three in the third. All five of the Wolf Pack runs came against UNM starter Drew Gillespie, but only three of those runs were earned.

The Lobos (11-7, 3-3 MW) rally started in the fourth inning as they plated two runs on three hits in the inning. In that frame, Jeff Deimling had a one-out single to right field. Ediberto Reyes followed that up with a double to right-centerfield to push Deimling to third. Zack Doak then drove both Deimling and Reyes home on a single through the left side, making it a 5-2 game.

An inning later, the Lobos scored two more runs to bring the deficit to a single run at 5-4. In that top of the fifth, Tyler Kelly led off with an infield single to shortstop. During the next at-bat, Kelly was picked off at first for the first out. Hayden Schilling later doubled to the opposite field down the left field line. Following Schilling’s double, Jared Mang connected for his third home run of the season down the left field line.

That would be the last of the Lobo threat as the Mang homer prompted a call to the bullpen by the Wolf Pack. A pair of Nevada relievers combined to work the last 4.2 innings of the game with neither allowing a Lobo to reach base, a streak of 14 to end to the game.

While the Nevada bullpen was working on the mound, the offense managed to push across one final run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to its eventual final of 6-4.

The Lobos will now return home where they are set to open a five-game home stand this coming week starting with a two-game mid-week series with Oklahoma. The first game against the Sooners is set for Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Santa Star Field.
