Mathis Named All-Mountain West Third Team

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Senior Anthony Mathis of The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team has been named to the 2019 All-Mountain West Third Team following his stellar senior season that has included tying the all-time UNM program record for most 3-pointers in a single season (102). The Mountain West announced the teams Wednesday following a vote from the league’s head coaches.

The honor marks the second straight for Mathis who was also named to the All-Mountain West Third Team last season.

So far this season he has racked up 441 points on 129 field goals including 102 3-pointers while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 42.7 percent from behind the arc. He leads the Lobos with 14.7 points per game on the season and 14.2 points per game in conference play.

Mathis is also currently riding a 23-game streak scoring from behind the arc, ranked fourth in program history.

Not only is he proficient from behind the arc, but he has had a standout season at the stripe as well as he ranks second in the MW in league games with an 87.0 free-throw percentage. He is third in 3-pointers per game with 3.2. In addition, the senior ranks 10th in nation in free-throw percentage on the season (89.0), 18th in 3-point field goals per game (3.40) and 21st in total 3-point field goals made (102).

He netted a career-high 27 points on Jan. 5 against then-No. 5/6 Nevada and has accumulated seven threes in a single game twice this season, tying for ninth in program history. He has registered seven 20+ point games this season and has scored in double digits in 23-of-30 games in 2018-19.

In his career, Mathis has collected 960 points, just 40 shy of 1,000, in 1,898 minutes after seeing just 328 minutes in his first two seasons as a Lobo and collecting just 86 points. He has also tallied 112 assists, 55 steals and 159 rebounds.

Mathis, along with redshirt-sophomore Vance Jackson and redshirt-junior Carlton Bragg also received All-MW Honorable Mention in the poll of media that covers the conference’s 11 teams. In addition, Jackson received one vote toward MW Newcomer of the Year.

Mathis and the rest of the seventh-seeded Lobos take on 10th-seed Wyoming in the first round of the 2019 Mountain West Championships on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. PT / 2:30 p.m. MT.
