ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to take on 10th-seed Wyoming on Wednesday as it opens the 2019 Mountain West Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. at 1:30 p.m. PT / 2:30 p.m. MT. The contest will mark the second straight year that the Lobos have faced the Cowboys in their first game at the tournament.

MOUNTAIN WEST TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

The Lobos face Wyoming in the first round with the winner advancing to take on second-seed Utah State in the MW Quarterfinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. MT.

UNM (13-17, 7-11 MW) enters the game coming off of an 88-81 loss in Laramie to the Cowboys after earning a 30-point victory over the squad at home inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit on Jan. 19 (83-53).

The last time the Lobos faced back-to-back squads ending the regular season and entering the conference tournament was in the 2015-16 season when UNM earned a 71-66 win on the road at Nevada before falling five days later to the Wolf Pack 64-62 in Las Vegas.

Wyoming (8-23, 4-14 MW) has just four conference wins on the season including a pair of back-to-back victories to end its regular season over San José State and UNM.

Senior Anthony Mathis needs just one 3-pointer to break the UNM program record for most threes in a single season. He currently has 102 threes this season after hitting 98 last year (ranked fourth). Mathis posts 960 points for his career, 40 points from the 1,000-point mark.

The Lobos lead the series with the Cowboys 72-68, but are 3-3 in neutral competition.
