ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team returns home on Tuesday night for a 9 p.m. clash with reigning Mountain West Champion San Diego State on ESPN2. 

The contest marks the sixth of 10 that the Lobos will play at 8 p.m. Mountain Time or later.

The Lobos (9-12, 3-6 MW) enter Tuesday night’s contest on a three-game skid including a close, two-point loss to second-place Utah State last Saturday. San Diego State (13-8, 5-3 MW) is 3-1 since its last meeting with the Lobos including three straight victories over UNLV, Air Force and San José State.

UNM continues to be led by senior Anthony Mathis who averages 15.7 points per game on the season and 16.1 points per game in conference play. He is currently ranked ninth in the country in 3-point field goals per game (3.76) and 11th in total 3-point field goals made (79).

SDSU is led by sophomore Jalen McDaniels who averages 16.8 points per game on the season, sixth in the league, and 20.0 in conference play.

SERIES HISTORY
New Mexico leads the series 47-40 including a 29-11 advantage at home. Last time the two teams met, the Aztecs earned a 20-point victory in San Diego in which the Lobos were led by Mathis’ 21 points on six threes.

UNM takes on the defending MW Champions inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit for the first time since Jan. 20, 2018 when the Lobos came away with a 79-75 victory.

The Aztecs ended the Lobos’ season last year with a seven-point victory in the 2018 Mountain West title game.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 28-27 in his second season with the Lobos, 56-33 in his third season as a head coach. SDSU head coach Brian Dutcher is 35-19 in his second season at the helm of the Aztecs and in his career.
