Lobos Net School Record 72 Fall MW All-Academic

Complete Fall 2018 Mountain West All-Academic List

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the second straight year, the Lobos picked up a record 72 student-athletes on the 2018 Mountain West All-Academic team.  The 72 are a program record for the Fall, topping the 66 that UNM had last year.  It’s the fifth straight year that UNM has had at least 60 honors in the Fall.

The Lobos were paced in the record-setting number by record performances by football, women’s soccer and volleyball.

Overall, Boise State led the way with a record 93 honorees with New Mexico second.  New Mexico has had the most Mountain West All-Academic selections in each of the least six academic years.  Last year UNM was second to Boise State in the Fall as well.

The women’s soccer team had a team record 20 honorees, and they became the first Mountain West women’s soccer team to ever have 20 honorees in a season.  The previous record for the program was 18, set twice before, including 2017-18.  The previous Mountain West record was 19, set last year by Fresno State, and then again this season by Utah State.

UNM also got a program-record 27 honorees in football, topping the previous mark of 23 set just last year.  It was the third time that the Lobo football team has achieved 20 or more honorees as the team had 20 in 2014.  The Mountain West implemented the program in the 2002-03 season, and of the 17 seasons that the awards have been handed out, the top five years in football all belong to Bob Davie.

The program picked up 20 in 2014, and 19 each in 2015 and 2016, giving the team 109 over the last five seasons.  New Mexico and Boise State are the only football programs over the last five seasons to have at least 19 Mountain West All-Academic selections in each season.

Additionally, the UNM volleyball team tied its program record with 11 honorees.  The team had 11 honorees last year as well as in 2010.  The 11 honorees led all Mountain West volleyball teams this past season.

UNM’s national runner-up cross country team was tied for third in the league with its 10 honorees, and it was tied for the second-most in program history as the team had 12 in 2010-11.  The men’s cross country team had four honorees.
