Lyle Earns Second MW Player of the Week Honor

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Redshirt-senior JaQuan Lyle of The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team earned his second Mountain West Player of the Week honor, the league announced Monday, for his outstanding performance in UNM’s first two conference contests last week. He earned the honor along with Nevada’s Jalen Harris as the pair were officially named Co-Men’s Basketball Players of the Week.

Lyle helped lead the Lobos to a 2-0 week in Mountain West play averaging 22.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also went 13-for-15 from the free throw line while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from behind the arc on the week.

In UNM’s 80-78 victory over Boise State at home on Wednesday, Lyle tied his career-high 31 points firing at a clip of 58.8 percent rom the floor (10-17) and 42.9 percent from 3-point range (3-7). In the contest, Lyle gave UNM its first lead against the Broncos with 2:40 left in the first half, hitting a pair of threes and a jumper, interrupted by just a layup from Boise State, for an 8-2 run over 2:52.

He followed up that performance with his ninth double-digit scoring game of the season on Saturday at Wyoming where he registered 13 points to go along with three assists and a pair of steals. 

On the week, Lyle registered a total of nine assists and four steals and averaged 2.0 steals, 4.5 assists and 0.5 blocks per game in 37.5 minutes per contest. 

He is currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation in four individual categories including in free throws made (7th, 53), free throw attempts (8th, 70), total minutes (15th, 369:41) and in total points (23rd, 195).

Lyle’s first MW honor of the season came on Nov. 18 following his performance that included averaging 24.5 points and 5.0 rebounds along with his career-high 31 points against Green Bay.

Lyle and the rest of the Lobos are set to return to action on Saturday when UNM is set to face in-state rival NM State for the second Rio Grande Rivalry matchup of the season. UNM earned a victory over the Aggies 78-77 on Nov. 21 in Las Cruces. The Lobos and the Aggies are scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14.
