ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to open Mountain West competition on Wednesday night, tipping off against the Boise State Broncos at 7:05 p.m. inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.

Wednesday’s Dec. 4 contest marks the earliest the Lobos have kicked off conference play since joining the Mountain West in 1999.

The Lobos (7-2) enter Wednesday’s matchup coming off of two straight wins including against Power 5 Wisconsin in Brooklyn on Tuesday (59-50) followed by a home win against Montana on Sunday, 72-63, while Boise State (4-2) is riding a three-win streak. The Broncos topped BYU 72-68 at home, Pacific 82-76 on the road and UNCW on Friday in Boise by a score of 80-59.

The Lobos are opening the 2019-20 conference season with Boise State after closing the 2018-19 regular-season home slate with the Broncos on Senior Night last season. UNM earned a 73-72 victory over Boise State on March 6, 2019. 

UNM, which currently leads the nation in made free throws with 163, is led by four players averaging scoring in double figures including redshirt-senior JaQuan Lyle (16.8), redshirt-senior Carlton Bragg (11.9), junior Makuach Maluach (10.4) and senior Corey Manigault (10.0). Bragg leads the Lobos with a near double-double as he also posts 9.6 rebounds per game.

Boise State is led by a trio of players averaging scoring in double figures including 2019-20 Preseason All-Mountain West team honoree Derrick Alston. The junior is averaging 21.8 points per game, followed by seniors RJ Williams (15.8) and Justinian Jessup (14.8). Williams is Boise State’s leading rebounder with 9.0 per game.

The Lobos lead the series with the Broncos 11-5 including a 6-2 advantage inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit. While UNM is 1-2 in the last three games of the series, the Lobos are 5-2 over the last seven.

THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 40-35 in his third year at the helm of the Lobos, 68-41 in his fourth season as a head coach. Boise State head coach Leon Rice is 178-116 in his 10th season with the Broncos and is the same in his career.
