Lobos find footing in 92-44 win over Northern New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A season-long three-game losing streak came to an emphatic end on Tuesday night as the University of New Mexico women’s basketball cruised past Northern New Mexico by a score of 92-44.

The Lobos (7-3), who led wire-to-wire in the game, were able to use the non-conference game with Northern New Mexico as an opportunity to reset as a team and prepare for a grueling upcoming slate of games that will see them play five games over a seven-day stretch. That gauntlet will begin this coming Saturday on the road as the Lobos will travel to Tempe, Ariz. and take on Arizona State of the Pac 12.

Two days later, the Lobos will host New Mexico State inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit for the final edition of this year’s Rio Grande Rivalry, presented by Nusenda Credit Union. After just a day off from the NM State game, the Lobos will play three games in three days as they host their annual Lobo Invitational. This year’s opponents will be Providence (Wednesday, Dec. 18), Loyola Marymount (Thursday, Dec. 19) and Ball State (Friday, Dec. 20).

In the game against Northern New Mexico, the Lobos were able to distribute minutes relatively evenly throughout the entire team with Jaedyn De La Cerda garnering the most minutes with 26 and Azaria Robinson the lowest with 12. All of that game action for the 11 players that logged minutes for the Lobos also led to a balanced scoring effort as well.

All 11 players scored in the game and four ended up in double figures. Shaiquel McGruder led the team and scored a career-high 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor. McGruder also hauled in six rebounds and tallied three steals and a block.

Jordan Hosey and Autumn Watts were next in scoring with 17 points each. For Hosey, it was the fourth game that she has scored double figures. A true freshman, Watts’ stat line on Tuesday was littered with single-game career bests as she tallied highs in points (17), minutes (25), rebounds (8) and three-pointers made (3). Ahlise Hurst rounded out double-digit scoring with 11 points.
