ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The date might have moved, but Lobo fans of all ages should make plans for Saturday afternoon to watch just watch the Lobos take on the Air Force Falcons, but to take part in all of the action of both Heroes Day, and Lobos Love Pink, as UNM Athletics honors the men and women of our armed forces, military, and first responders, along with all those who have been affected by breast cancer.
The Lobos take on Air Force at noon at Dreamstyle Stadium, and tickets are as low as $9 for groups of 25 or more, and $13 for single tickets. But as always, it’s more than just a game.
UNM’s free Howl Zone will be brimming with plenty of activity. Along with live music and food and beverage from Rio Bravo Brewing and Albertsons, there will be displays from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force as well as the National Guard. Additionally, there will be representatives from the New Mexico State Police department, Albuquerque Fire and Rescue, Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue, the New Mexico Police Youth Academy, the Albuquerque Police department, Bernalillo County Metro Detention Center and the UNM Veteran’s Resource Center.
The displays will be interactive with fire trucks, police cars, motorcycles and the mobile crime units. There will even be two military helicopters that will be landing at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday and fans will be able to talk with the pilots and see how they work. It’s all free in the Howl Zone on Saturday.
Inside the stadium, there will be a flyover prior to the national anthem, and there will be a swearing in ceremony for new recruits.
But our military, armed forces and first responders aren’t the only heroes being honored on Saturday, as it’s also Lobos Love Pink day, as we honor those that have been affected by breast cancer. Prior to the game UNM will be hosting around 150 breast cancer survivors, and they will be honored during the game as well.
The game on Saturday is UNM’s first home game since the tragic passing of Lobo defensive tackle Nahje Flowers, and there will be a moment of silence just after the coin toss.
The weather is slated to be perfect with sunshine and 50 degree temperatures, a perfect day to support your Lobo football team, and honor those that serve and that have been affected by cancer.
