Dyer, Stapley Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

Complete CoSIDA Academic All-District Teams

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A pair of junior business administration majors, punter Tyson Dyer and offensive lineman Kyle Stapley, were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams for District 7.  The pair of Lobos will now advance to the national ballot.  The Division I CoSIDA Academic All-America team will be announced on December 9.

The pair are the first Lobos to be honored by CoSIDA for their academic prowess since 2016, when Garrett Adcock was named All-District on the way to being named Academic All-America.  Overall it’s the seventh time in the last eight seasons that a Lobo has earned Academic All-District honors.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and play in at least half of a teams’ games.  District 7 comprises all Division I institutions in the states of Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas, totaling over 30 institutions.

Dyer, a native of Queensland, Australia, is one of the top punters in the NCAA this year and is a Ray Guy Candidate.  Dyer is currently 11th nationally in punting at 45.9 yards per punt, and he has UNM at 14th in net average, but of Dyer’s 45 punts, 28 of them have been killed inside the 20-yard line, and that total leads the nation.  Additionally, his punts inside the 20 percentage of 62.2% also leads the nation.

Last year, Dyer as a sophomore hit the longest punt in the university’s history, an 84-yarder at Air Force that was downed at the 1-yard line.

Stapley, a Morgan, Utah native who likes to participate in demolition derbies in the off-season, is one of the top linemen in the Mountain West.  Stapley’s pass blocking efficiency of 99.2% is third-best in the Mountain West and tops among centers.  UNM this season was the last FBS team to allow a sack.  Stapley is a national award candidate as well, as he is on the Rimington Watch list.
