ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Head coach Glen Millican and assistant coach Gustavo Morantes of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team are excited to announce that Matthew Watkins, a standout competitor from Rockwall, Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Lobos in the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Millican on Matthew Watkins: “I am excited about having Matthew join Lobo golf today. I have watched him for almost two years now and been able to see him develop into a great player. His experience playing in Texas has given him the opportunity to test his game against other great players and on great golf courses. I believe his game is suited well for the transition to college golf and I look forward to him starting with us next year.”
Watkins is set to graduate from Rockwall High School in Spring 2020 after recording a solid high school golf career under head coach Billy Watkins. With his team, Watkins earned two district championship titles in 2016-17 and 2018-19 and his 2019 squad qualified for the state championship. Throughout his time at Rockwall High School, Watkins held an outstanding stroke average of 71.8.
Watkins on why he chose UNM: “UNM gave me the best college visit I’ve had and the team and coaches are all great guys. The atmosphere of Albuquerque is amazing- I never thought of New Mexico as much until I went to Albuquerque.”
Watkins is set to join the rest of the UNM men’s golf team in Fall 2020. For more on UNM Lobo men’s golf, follow GoLobos.com or follow @UNMLoboMGolf on Twitter.
