Lobos in Fourth Through Round One in California

MONTEREY, CALIF. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished the first round of the Saint Mary’s Invitational hosted by Saint Mary’s in fourth place out of 16 competitors on Monday. Three Lobos are sitting in the top-10 after round one, redshirt-junior Ross Sincliar, sophomore Sam Choi and freshman Albert Boneta who each shot two under, 69 to tie for ninth.

Of the Lobo trio leading the squad, Choi carded the most birdies (4) while Sincliar shot the most pars (14), tying for third in the category. Of Choi’s birdies, three were recorded on his third, fourth and fifth holes, consecutively, while the fourth was earned on his final hole of the day. Boneta led the team in par-3 scoring in round one as his average of 2.40 (-3) tied for first overall. Boneta was also the only Lobo competitor to register an eagle on the day, happening on his 15th hole of the day, hole #6.

UNM’s individual senior Sam Dickey followed by just one stroke as he finished round one tied for 21st at one under, 70. Dickey also shot four birdies on the day and his average of 2.60 (-2) on par-3s tied for second overall.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya shot a 72 (+1) in the round to tie for 42nd while junior Galven Green came in two strokes behind at 74 (+3) to tie for 65th. Green shot 13 pars on the day to tie for fourth in the category while Arcaya notched 11.

As a team, the Lobos combined for a team score of five under, 279 to finish round one just one stroke behind third-place Arizona (278, -6) and three strokes behind second-place BYU (276, -8). The squad finished tied for first in par-3 scoring with an average of 2.92 (-2) and its 62 pars in the round was just two short of the tournament leader, BYU (64).

Colorado State leads after round one as it sits nine strokes ahead of the competition with a score of 17 under, 267. Individually, Colorado State has three competitors in the top six including Davis Bryant who holds first at seven under, 64, Oscar Teiffel who is tied for second at six under, 65 and Parathakorn Suyasri who is tied for sixth at three under, 68.

Round two of the Saint Mary’s Invitational is set to tee off on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by round three on Wednesday.
