ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team is hitting the road again to compete in a dual meet against Northern Arizona on Friday, Nov. 1 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Last year the Lobos met with the Lumberjacks at home, outscoring NAU 186-114. Among the Lobos’ 12 first-place finishes during the meet, current sophomore Hedda Øritsland generated individual wins in the 50-yard free with a time of 23.47, the 100-yard free (50.42) and 100-yard butterfly (55.17). UNM junior Matea Sumajstorcic took the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.98, while sophomore Raine Gavino topped the 200-yard breast, touching the wall at 2:26.46. The Lobos also notched first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.73) and the 400-yard free relay (3:29.07).
The Lobos will enter the dual meet after coming off of a strong showing at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational which was hosted by Fresno State on Oct. 11-12. The team notched 402 points overall to finish in fifth-place, just 2.5 points behind fourth-place Washington State. The meet was highlighted by senior Natasha Dark and freshman Olivia Bishop who grabbed a combined 60 points towards the Lobos’ total score. Bishop was also a member of five relay squads finishing in the top ten through the weekend, contributing another 126 points to UNM’s total score.
The match-up on Friday will be the first home meet of the season for NAU after coming off of losses against Air Force (96-146) and CSU (97.5-144.5). The two losses put the squad at 1-2 on the season, with NAU notching a win against Northern Colorado (157.5-142) earlier in the season.
UNM will wrap up the fall season by traveling to Dallas, Texas where the squad will compete at the SMU Invitational on Nov. 21-23. In addition to SMU, the Lobos will face TCU, LSU, Fresno State, Incarnate Word and Missouri State during the three days.
This weekend’s meet against the Lumberjacks will kick off at 5 p.m. MT on Friday inside NAU’s Wall Aquatic Center.
