Trio of Lobos receive MW preseason honors; team picked second
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West unveiled its annual women’s basketball preseason awards and predicted order of finish on Thursday and the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team was well-represented.
Returning standouts Jayla Everett and Aisia Robertson were named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team while highly-touted newcomer Corina Carter garnered Co-Freshman of the Year honors. As a team, the Lobos were picked to finish second in the league according to the MW’s predicted order of finish, which is voted on by the 11 league head coaches and various media outlets as well.
Defending regular season and tournament champion Boise State was picked ahead of the Lobos and received 25 of the 29 first-place votes. UNM received three first-place votes while San José State garnered the other first-place vote.
Both Everett and Robertson took the league by storm last season in their initial campaign as Lobos and garnered top individual postseason awards as a result with Everett being named the MW Freshman of the Year and Robertson being the MW Newcomer of the Year. The two dynamic guards ranked in the top-15 in the league in scoring and assists as Everett was 11th in scoring at 13.5 ppg and seventh in assists with 3.7 apg while Robertson was sixth in scoring at 14.3 ppg and first in assists with 6.6 apg.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Carter joins Fresno State’s Haley Cavinder as MW Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year. Highly-touted as a four-star recruit out of high school, Carter was rated as the No. 64 prospect overall and the No. 16 point guard in the 2019 class by ESPNW. Carter was also the highest-rated prospect to sign at a non-Power 5 school. In her senior season, Carter led her high school team, Judson HS, to the Texas 6A State Championship where she was also named the championship game MVP. Additionally, Carter was named as the Offensive MVP and first team all-district as a senior.
The trio of honorees and the rest of the Lobos are gearing up for the 2019-20 season opener on Tuesday, November 5 against UC Riverside. Tip-off for the game is set for 7 p.m. inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
