Jansson Leads Lobos During Day One in the Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished the first round of The White Sands Invitational hosted by Houston on Monday at the Ocean Club Golf Course. Junior Caroline Jansson led the Lobos for round one tied for 27th overall in a field of 82 competitors.

Jansson finished the first 18 holes one over, 73 on the day with the help of 11 pars and three birdies. Her score put her one stroke behind 21st, two strokes behind 12th and just three strokes out of the top 10 in the tough field. Leading the tournament on the day was Sophie Guo out of No. 2 Texas who posted an outstanding -6 through the first round.

Freshmen Lauren Lehigh and Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana finished just three over on the day to tie for second for the Lobos and 42nd overall with a first-round score of 75 (+3).

Sophomore Tiana Cruz and freshman Alice Rindestig rounded out the UNM squad finishing five over for a score of 77. The pair tied for 64th overall in the field.

As a team, the Lobos finished round one in 14th place with a score of 300 (+12). Leading after round one is No. 2 Texas with a score of 276 (-12). Arkansas is second after the first 18 holes with a score of 283 (-5) while host Houston follows at one under (287), 13 strokes less than UNM. The Lobos finished just six strokes behind No. 22 Mississippi State which sits in eighth with a score of 294.

Round two of the White Sands Invitational will tee off on Tuesday at 8 a.m. ET/6 a.m. MT with a shotgun start. Fans can follow the action live via GOLFSTAT.
