Lobos Through Two Rounds of Royal Oaks Intercollegiate

DALLAS, TEXAS — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished day one of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Baylor in fifth place after improving nine strokes between the first two rounds on Monday. Freshman Albert Boneta is leading the Lobos after day one as he sits tied for 17th overall at an even 142.

Boneta shot a one over, 71 in round one followed by a one under, 70 in round two to finish even on the day. The freshman began each round with a birdie and carded a total of seven over the first two rounds, two in round one and five in round two.

Junior Galven Green followed by just one stroke as he shot a one over, 143 to tie for 21st.  The junior’s total was made up of first-round score of 71 (E) and second-round score of 72 (+1). Green led the squad in pars as his total of 27 was just two short of the tournament leader (29). Green and Boneta each shot averages of 4.00 (E) in par-4 scoring to tie for fourth in the category.

Sophomore Sam Choi improved his first-round score by two strokes as he shot an even 71 in round two following a first-round score of two over, 73. Choi finished day one tied for 28th as he posted a total of 144 (+2).

Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair and UNM’s individual senior Sam Dickey each shot scores of 145 (+3) to tie for 34th. Sinclair led the Lobos in birdies as he notched two in round one and six in round two to total eight on the day. Dickey shot just one less birdie, combining for seven between his two rounds.

Sophomore Ignacio Arcaya shot scores of 73 (+2) and 76 (+5) in the first two rounds, respectively, to land in a tie for 52nd at 149 (+7).

As a team, the Lobos shot a first-round score of 289 (+5) and a second-round score of 280 (-4) to finish 569 (+1) after two rounds. The squad tied for first in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.60 (-12) and its 29 birdies marked the fourth most overall. UNM is sitting just one stroke behind fourth-place Michigan which shot an even 568 across its two rounds.

SMU is leading the competition at 12 under, 556 while Liberty is in second at 557 (-11). Host Baylor occupies the third-place spot as it registered a two-round total of 562 (-6).

Individually, Liberty’s Ervin Chang and Michigan’s Charlie Pilon lead the competition as they are tied for first with scores of six under, 136.

Round three of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate is set to tee off on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. MT with a staggered shotgun start.
