ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team is set to host perhaps its biggest Mountain West test of the season in No. 5/6 Nevada on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. inside Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
The game will air live on ESPNU and the Lobos will feature brand new uniforms sporting the We Are New Mexico theme!
Both New Mexico (7-6) and Nevada (14-0) enter Saturday night’s contest coming off of wins in their Mountain West openers. The Lobos earned a 65-58 victory over Air Force on the road Wednesday to extend UNM’s win streak in conference openers to eight while Nevada comes off of a 72-49 win over Utah State.
Nevada enters Saturday’s game as one of just four remaining undefeated NCAA DI teams.
UNM’s Anthony Mathis continues to move up in the national rankings and has amassed 202 points already this season (just 279 away from 1,000). He is currently ranked 11th in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (3.69), 14th in both total 3-point field goals made (48) and in free throw percentage (91.9). Mathis has gone a perfect 17-for-17 from the stripe over the last four games.
Freshman Drue Drinnon is also ranked nationally in assist to turnover ratio with 3.33.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lobos lead the all-time series over Nevada 6-5 with the Wolf Pack riding a four-win streak in the series. The Lobos also hold a 3-1 advantage over Nevada in The Pit.
Last time the two teams met, UNM nearly pulled off an upset victory over the then-defending MW Champions. The Lobos fell by just three points on the road, 77-74, after a failed last-second 3-pointer attempt. It was just the second MW game of the season for UNM.
THE COACHES
Head coach Paul Weir is 26-21 in his second season with the Lobos, 54-27 in his third season as a head coach. Nevada head coach Eric Musselman is 95-29 in his fourth season at the helm of the Wolf Pack, the same in his career as a head coach.
