COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman guard Jayla Everett has become the fourth University of New Mexico women’s basketball player to be named Player of the Week as it was announced by the league office on Monday morning.
OFFICIAL MW RELEASE
Everett, a native of St. Louis, Mo., joins the likes of teammates Ahlise Hurst, Jaisa Nunn and Aisia Robertson to earn the weekly award this season. Previously the trio of Lobos were honored in consecutive weeks dating back to November 19.
In earning the nod for herself, Everett was a key cog in the Lobos’ 2-0 week that also propelled them to first place in the league standings. For the week, Everett averaged 22.5 points per game as she scored 23 points against UNLV and 22 against Utah State.
Most of the damage done by Everett for the week came from long range as 12 of her 13 made field goals came from distance. Volume was not the only success Everett had from beyond the arc as she shot 57%, going 12-of-21.
In the game at Utah State, Everett was clutch in the fourth quarter as she scored 11 points and was a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range in the period. The last of her threes was the eventual game-winning shot that broke a 62-all tie with 51 seconds to go. Everett also make a pair of free throws in the waning seconds to keep the Lobos out in front and ultimately win the game.
