Lobos Sitting in Sixth After Two Rounds in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz.— The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is sitting in sixth place out of 16 teams after two rounds of play on Monday at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona. 

The squad improved six places on the leaderboard over the course of the day after a tough first round left them in 12th place. Senior Sean Carlon led the way for the Lobos in a tie for 13th overall after posting a score of two under, 69 in both rounds of the day’s action.

Carlon posted a two-round score of 138 (-4) and led the team in birdies (8) after day one of tournament play. He finished day one eight strokes out of first place and just five strokes out of second.

Coming in three strokes behind Carlon and sitting tied for 25th was freshman Roy Choi who shot a combined total of 141 (-1) in the first two rounds. Choi leads the team in pars with 27 and is just one par behind the tournament leader (28). 

Also bringing in the pars for New Mexico was freshman Sam Choi who registered 26 and sits in third for New Mexico (T39th overall) after registering a two-round total of one over, 143.  

Freshman Ignacio Arcaya finished just one stroke behind and was able to chop off eight strokes between rounds as he took his round-one total of 76 (+5) down to a 68 (-3) in round two. Arcaya found his stride as he posted five birdies in the second round of action after seeing just one in the first round. He sits in a tie for 45th after jumping up 25 spots on the leaderboard throughout the day. Sophomore Galven Green rounded out New Mexico’s top five, shooting four over, 146 over the first two rounds. 

As a team, the Lobos posted a score of seven under, 561 after improving seven strokes between round one and round two. New Mexico is seven strokes behind fifth-place St. Mary’s, which shot a seven under, 561 on the day. The squad finished second overall in pars, registering a combined total of 121, just one behind Loyola Marymount’s 122.

Leading the competition after two rounds is Arizona State, which posted a 547 (-21) and is five strokes ahead of second-place Arizona and UCLA, which are both tied with 16 under, 552.  

Round three of the Arizona Intercollegiate is set to begin on Tuesday, January 29 at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. LIVE STATS
