Men's Golf Kicks Off Spring Season in Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz.— The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is set to kick off its spring season Monday, January 28, through Tuesday, January 29, at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona. The action will take place at the Sewalio Golf Club, a 7,283-yard, par-72 course located in Tucson, Ariz.

The competitive field for the tournament will consist of 16 teams including host Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Denver, Iowa State, LMU, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, St. Mary’s, Texas A&M, Little Rock, UCLA, UTEP, UTSA and Washington. New Mexico will be making its 35th appearance at the tournament in program history and has taken home first place twice (2005 and 2013).
Host Arizona, which took home first place last year at the tournament, enters the competition averaging 295.58 strokes over 34 rounds, while New Mexico holds an average of 290.87 in 15 rounds (good for seventh in the Mountain West). Also among the competition is Arizona State, which is sitting fourth overall in the Pac-12, holds an average score of 286.67 in 41 rounds and has recorded two wins on the season.
The Lobos had a strong fall season, recording two top-five finishes at both the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted in Albuquerque (September 28-29, 2018) and the Maridoe Intercollegiate hosted by North Texas (October 6-8, 2018). UNM also saw a seventh-place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational hosted by SMU (September 23-25, 2018).
Four Lobos earned a top-10 finish in the fall, including senior Sean Carlon, senior Augustin Holé, freshman Roy Choi and freshman Sam Choi. Both Holé and Roy Choi recorded their top-10 finishes at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate (hosted by the University of St. Thomas) on September 8-9, 2018 with Choi finishing tied for seventh and Holé clinching fourth. Sam Choi saw his top-10 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate finishing tied for fourth while Carlon finished tied for 10th at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Posting the lowest average on the team through the fall season and sitting 24th in the Mountain West individual rankings is Sam Choi, averaging 72.7 strokes over 15 rounds of play. Coming in behind Choi is redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair who is averaging 73.0 strokes over nine rounds and is sitting ranked tied for 26th in the MW. Sean Carlon is posting the third lowest average on the team with 73.1 strokes in 15 rounds of action (30th in MW).
Round one and two of the Arizona Intercollegiate will be held on Monday, Jan 28 followed by round three on Tuesday, Jan 29. Both days will tee off at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start.
