Skiing Heads to Montana State Invitational

Montana State Invitational Notes/Season Stats

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — After an opening weekend that went well, and technically isn’t done yet, the Lobo ski team heads to Bozeman, Montana for the second of four regular season meets, the Montana State Invitational.  The meet runs from Wednesday through Saturday.

The meet will also be the site of the second of two RMISA giant slalom qualifiers, and that will run on Thursday.  Additionally, the final event of the Colorado Invitational, the slalom, will be contested in Montana on Saturday after the alpine portion of the MSU meet is over.  It all makes for a confusing, but busy week of skiing with four alpine events and two Nordic events.

The were lots of good stories out of the opening weekend, but none better than freshman Kornelius Grøv, who picked up UNM’s first men’s Nordic race title in nearly four years with a win in the 10K freestyle race.  He was just 1.0 seconds away from pulling off the rare double, as he finished third in the 10K classical race the next day.  That work by Grøv overshadowed a pair of top-10 finishes by his teammate Ricardo Izquierdo-Bernier, who had a career-best fourth in the classical race.

On the mountain, UNM had six top-10s in the opening giant slalom qualfier, and a host of great marks.  Highlighting the way for the women was Rebecca Fiegl, who had a career-best fourth-place finish in the qualifier, and then did it again the next day. Antonia Wearmouth had a fifth-place giant slalom finish and Soňa Moravčíková scored in all three races, including two sixth-place finishes.  On the men’s side, Tyler Theis equaled his best finish with fifth in the giant slalom qualifier and then finished 10th in the meet giant slalom.
