USTFCCCA Release | USTFCCCA TFRI Summary
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Two days after the women were projected fourth in the FloTrack indoor season ranking, The University of New Mexico women’s track and field team was tabbed ninth in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll released on Thursday.
It was a new program best for the Lobos as the women broke into the top-10 of the preseason poll for the first time in school history. Last year, the women started the season ranked 25th in the country, working their way up to a program-best eighth towards the end of the season before finishing the season ranked 10th.
The Lobos received a TFRI (Track and Field Rating Index) of 74.24 points to earn the top-10 spot, just 0.24 behind No. 8 Georgia and 6.75 points ahead of Kentucky.
The metric took into account current qualifying marks from Ednah Kurgat, Weini Kelati, Charlotte Prouse and Adva Cohen for their times produced at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Dec. 1 in the 5,000-meter run, as well as season results from last season. UNM also received totals from Kurgat’s mile and 3,000-meter time from 2018 as well as from Kelati, Prouse and Hannah Nuttall’s 3,000-meter result. The final mark that was taken into consideration for the preseason ranking was Ada’ora Chigbo’s high jump mark from 2018.
UNM was one of two Mountain West teams to be ranked in the top 25, joined by Boise State at 18th with 41.97 points.
The Lobos have already recorded results for the indoor season at the Dec. 1 meet at Boston University, but for the majority of the team, the indoor season kicks off at home on Jan. 18 at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational.
Fans can attend UNM home track meets using their New Mexico Mutual Pride Pass, which can be purchased for $50, and includes admission to all indoor track, baseball and softball home events.
