Lobos Sit Fourth After Two at Colorado Invitational
Colorado Invitational Giant Slalom Results/Team Standings Through Two Events
NEDERLAND, Colo. — The Lobos picked up three more top 10 finishes, including another fourth-place finish from Rebecca Fiegl as the Lobos are currently in fourth place after the first two events, the men’s and women’s giant slalom, in the Colorado Invitational.
The Colorado Invitational will continue Friday with the men’s and women’s slalom races, which will conclude the alpine portion of the meet. The Nordic portion will be contested Saturday and Sunday.
Overall the Lobos picked up 126 points on the day, and the Lobos are 43 back of first place Denver. UNM is just four points out of third place, trailing Montana State 130-126. The Lobos got 74 points in the women’s giant slalom, which put them second in the competition. The men finished with 52 points, good for sixth place. It shows the difference from day to day, as had point totals been counted for yesterday’s giant slalom, UNM’s men’s team would have won the race.
The women’s giant slalom was contested first, as opposed to Wednesday’s giant slalom qualifier. The Lobos got a pair of big runs to open the meet, with Fiegl opening in third place, Soňa Moravčíková sitting in fifth and Antonia Wearmouth in eighth. That put UNM in great position with UNM’s other three skiers all within striking distance of the top 15.
Fiegl, who never finished higher than fifth last year in any race, picked up a second straight fourth place finish, picking up 31 points for UNM. Moravčíková equaled her finish from yesterday, coming in sixth, for 27 points, and Katharine Irwin finished in 15th place and scoring 16 points for UNM.
Wearmouth ended up with a DNF in the second run, losing a chance at a second straight top-10 finish. Haley Cutler finished 17th and Chloe Margue was 20th.
For the men, Tyler Theis again led the way, finishing 10th, scoring 21 points. He was just 0.51 seconds ahead of teammate Vegard Busengdal, who finished 12th for 19 points. Olav Sanderberg finished 22nd for UNM, one spot ahead of teammate Alex Barounos. Sanderberg scored 12 points.
Thomas Anderson was UNM’s other skier to place, coming in 27th. Nick Veth did not finish his second run.
NOTES: Fiegl now has six top-5 finishes in her career, but she missed her first career podium by 0.52 seconds … Moravčíková represented Slovakia in the 2018 Winter Olympics … Alex Barounos’s 58.46 second run was the fourth-fastest in that run … Theis was the men’s leading skier in back-to-back races for the first time in his career.
