Lobos Second after Day One, One Stroke From First

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished day one of the annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in second place on Friday at the UNM Championship Golf Course. The squad completed the first two rounds just one stroke behind tournament-leader Arizona after shooting a combined 13 under, 562.

The Lobos shot a first-round score of 282 (-6) and a second-round score of 281 (-7) while leading the competition in birdies with a combined 42. New Mexico also led the competition in both par-4 and par-5 scoring as it averaged 4.00 (E) and 4.45 (-22) in each category, respectively.

Junior Galven Green led the squad on day one as he shot an outstanding score of 139 (-5) to finish in a tie for fourth. The junior carded a one under, 71 in round one and a four under, 68 in round two with the help of 10 birdies, five in round one and five in round two.

Sophomore Sam Choi trailed by just one stroke as he shot a four under, 140 to tie for sixth overall. Choi led the team in pars as his total of 25 on the day is just two behind the tournament leader. Redshirt-junior Ross Sinclair improved his first-round score by four strokes in round two as he registered a three under, 69 to bring his combined score to 142 (-2).

The Lobos fielded two teams, including a “B” squad. Senior Sam Dickey (B) and sophomore Ignacio Arcaya wrapped up round two at two under, 142 to land in a tie for 14th overall. Arcaya led the Lobos in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.13 (-7), tied for first in the category, and he carded nine birdies in his first two rounds of work.

Freshman Albert Boneta was the next-best scorer for the Lobos shooting scores of 73 (+1) in both round one and round two as his total of 146 (+2) put him in a tie for 33rd on the day. Representing the New Mexico “B” team, sophomore Jack Anderson trailed by two strokes after shooting a two-round score of 148 (+4) to sit tied for 41st.

Redshirt-sophomore Brad Cole carded the only two Lobo eagles on the day with one on the 14th hole and another on the 18th hole, both in round two.

Arizona claims the lead with a 14 under, 562 through two rounds, followed by UNM in second, just one stroke behind (-13, 562). BYU, which has claimed the overall victory in the last two William H. Tucker Intercollegiates, ranks in third with a score of nine under, 576. Last year’s individual champion, BYU’s Peter Kuest, holds first place after round two as his two-round score of 11 under, 133 is four strokes ahead of the second-place finisher, Trevor Werbylo of Arizona (-7, 137).

The New Mexico B team finished round two in 13th place with a combined total of 21 over, 597.

Round three of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate will tee off on Saturday at 7:45 a.m. Fans are encouraged to come out to the UNM Championship Golf Course to cheer on their Lobos!
