Jansson Leads Lobos Through Day One in Washington

PULLMAN, WASH. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished its first two rounds of competition at the Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State on Monday. Junior Caroline Jansson was the Lobos’ top finisher on the day, tied for 22nd in the field of 89 competitors.

Jansson finished the first round with a 73 (+1) before shaving off a stroke in the second round (72, E) for a two-round total of 145 (+1). The junior also finished the first two rounds tied for third in par-4 scoring with an average of 3.81.

Freshman Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana finished behind Jansson in second in the team standings, posting a 74 (+2) in both rounds to finish with a two-round total of 148 (T42).

Junior Tiana Cruz and freshman Lauren Lehigh tied for third on the Lobo squad, 53rd overall. Both players notched an eagle in round one, Cruz’s eagle came on hole 10 where she finished the first round with a 74 (+2) and concluded round two with a 76 (+4). Lehigh’s eagle came on hole 15 while she finished round one with a 78 (+6). Lehigh registered a six-stroke improvement to finish at par (72) for round two. The pair of Lobos tied for 53rd overall through two rounds with a score of 150 (+6).

Freshman Alice Rindestig rounded out the Lobo squad through day one. She shot a 76 (+4) and a 75 (+3) in rounds one and two, respectively to finish the day with a score of 151 (+7) to tie for 62nd.
 
UNM finished day one of competition tied for 11th with Pepperdine (590, +14) whom they previously competed against at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The Waves topped the Lobos in their first outing by 28 strokes as Pepperdine took second in Albuquerque. Oregon State currently holds the top spot on the team leaderboard in Washington with a score of 563 (-13).
 
The Lobos will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. MT (7:45 a.m. PT) as the squad looks to edge their way into the top ten.
