Men’s Golf Heads to NCAA Regionals Monday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico Golf team is set to head to the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional competition hosted by the University of Louisville on Monday, May 13 – Wednesday, May 15. The Louisville Regional will take place at the 7,217-yard, par-71 course at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

The Louisville Regional will be one of six regional tournaments taking place May 13-15 and will include a strong field of 13 teams and 10 individuals. The competition, listed by seed, is made up of Oklahoma State, Auburn, North Florida, Louisville, Baylor, Arkansas State, Iowa State, West Virginia, Arizona, Mississippi State, New Mexico, Jacksonville State and Southern Illinois.

No. 1 seed Oklahoma State is ranked first in the Golfstat national Division I rankings as it holds a comparative record of 299/299 with six team wins on the season. The Cowboys clinched the automatic bid into the NCAA DI Golf Championships as they took home their 55th conference title with a first-place finish at the Big 12 Championship with a team score of 13 under, 827.

Second-seed Auburn is ranked 11th in the Golfstat rankings as it holds a comparative record of 287/299 with two tournament wins on the season.

The Lobos enter the tournament following their seventh Mountain West Championship victory on April 26-28. The squad combined for a score of 33 under, 831 as it led the competition in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.00 (E). UNM also carded the most pars at the tournament with 181. Sophomore Galven Green and senior Sean Carlon led the competition as their equal scores of 13 under, 203 tied them for first overall, sending the two into a sudden-death playoff for the individual title. It was Green who prevailed as a five-foot putt on the third hole of the playoff landed him the individual trophy.

New Mexico will bring the same conference-winning lineup to the Louisville Regional including Green, Carlon and freshmen Sam Choi, Roy Choi, and Ignacio Arcaya. The Lobos are also bringing along redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair to the tournament.

Green enters the tournament following an outstanding first-place finish at the Mountain West Championships to mark his top finish of the season. The sophomore shot his best score of the competition with a 66 (-6) in round two along with a first-round score of 70 (-2) and a third-round score of 67 (-5) for a combined 203 (-13). His score of 66 marked the second time this season he has registered his low-round of 66 with the first being at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted by UNM on Sept. 28-29.

Green carded the most birdies on the team at the conference tournament as his five in round one, seven in round two and six in round three brought his total to 18. He also finished the competition tied for second in par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring, averaging 2.92 (-1), 3.90 (-3) and 4.25 (-9), respectively.

Carlon shot a score of 13 under, 203 at the Mountain West Championship as he finished tied for first (second after a playoff with Green) to mark his top finish of the season. He finished with a first-round score of 67 (-5) followed by back-to-back scores of 68 (-4) in both the second and third rounds. The senior started off the competition strong with an eagle on the second hole of round one and continued to shoot 15 birdies across his three rounds of work. Carlon finished tied for first in par-5 scoring with an outstanding average of 4.17 (-10) and his average of 2.92 (-1) on par-3s, tied for second.

The senior’s previous top finish of the season occurred on Feb. 21-23 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii as he finished tied for fourth with a score of 209 (-7). Carlon has shot his low-round score of 67 three times this season, once at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) hosted by Arizona, the second occurring at the PING Cougar Classic hosted by BYU and the third at the Mountain West Championships. Carlon has three top-10 finishes on the season and has received two Mountain West Golfer of the Week honors on the year.

Choi finished the Mountain West Championships tied for 14th with a score of 210 (-6). The freshman carded his best score of the tournament in round three as he shot a new low-round score of 66 (-6) which marked a seven-stroke improvement from his second-round score of 73 (+1). Choi was one of two Lobos to register an eagle in the competition and his par-4 scoring average of 3.90 (-3) tied for second while his par-3 scoring average of 3.00 (E) tied for third in the category.

Choi registered his top finish of the season at the PING Cougar Classic which was the final tournament of the Lobos’ regular-season schedule. The freshman also has three top-10 finishes on the season, two in the fall and one in the spring.

Choi shot a 217 (+1) at the Mountain West Championships to tie for 35th with scores of 71 (-1) in both of the first two rounds followed by a 75 (+1) in round three. The freshman recorded 38 pars which was just six short of the tournament par leader, UNM’s freshman Ignacio Arcaya who posted 44. Choi also tied for fifth in par-3 scoring with a 3.17 (+2) average.

Choi registered his top finish of the season at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate as he tied for seventh with a score of 215 (-1) to give him his first top-10 finish of his career. The freshman holds a low-round score of 69 which he achieved in the second round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on January 28.

Freshman Ignacio Arcaya 45706

Arcaya improved four spots on the leaderboard throughout the conference championship as he landed in a tie for 42nd with a total of 221 (+5). His 44 pars led the competition and was three ahead of the second-place finisher who shot 41. Arcaya performed his best on par-3 scoring as his average of 3.00 (E) tied for third in the category.

The freshman recorded his top finish of the season at the Pioneer Creek Collegiate hosted by the University of Minnesota on September 8-9 as he finished tied for 22nd with a score of 221 (+5). Arcaya shot a low-round of 65 at the Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona on January 28-29 to mark the lowest-scoring round posted by a Lobo this season.

Sinclair enters the Louisville Regional ranked 20th in the Mountain West with an average score of 72.78. The redshirt-sophomore shot his low-round score of 68 at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sept. 23-25 and he recorded his top finish of the season on March 11-12 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic hosted by San Diego State as he finished tied for 20th with a score of 219 (+3).

The Lobos will tee off in the 2019 Louisville Regional on Monday at 6:55 a.m. MT (8:55 a.m. ET).
