Chen, Irwin Earn Google Cloud Academic All-District
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Yue Lin “Polly” Chen of women’s tennis and Katharine Irwin of skiing were both named to Google Cloud Academic All-District for District VII for the at-large teams. They are the eighth and ninth Lobos to be named Google Cloud Academic All-District, and both now advance to the national ballot. This is the first honor for Chen, and Irwin was named First Team Google Cloud Academic All-America last year.
The At-Large team is considered the toughest team to get on, as it encompasses the following sports:
- Women’s Beach Volleyball
- Women’s Bowling
- Women’s Crew/Rowing
- Men’s and Women’s Fencing
- Women’s Field Hockey
- Men’s and Women’s Golf
- Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics
- Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey
- Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse
- Men’s and Women’s Rifle
- Men’s and Women’s Skiing
- Men’s and Women’s Swimming
- Men’s and Women’s Tennis
- Men’s Volleyball
- Men’s and Women’s Water Polo
- Men’s Wrestling
. District 7 consists of all Division I teams from Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
Chen, who has a 4.04 GPA as a sophomore in business administration, went 22-7 while playing No. 6 singles for New Mexico. She also went 20-12 in doubles, making her the only player on the women’s tennis team to win 20 matches in both singles and doubles. Irwin has a 4.12 GPA in biology as a senior, she bounced back from off-season surgery to help UNM skiing to a sixth place finish at NCAAs. Irwin, who was the national runner-up in the giant slalom last year, had three top-20 finishes on the season, and he finished her career with 28 top-20 finishes.
Irwin was one of two women’s skiers in Division I to be named to the Google Cloud At Large team, joining Julie Mohagen from District 8.
