Lobos Finish 12th, Carlon Sixth at NCAA Regionals

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. — The University of New Mexico men’s golf team concluded its 2018-19 season with a 12th-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Regional competition hosted by the University of Louisville on Wednesday. The squad was led by senior Sean Carlon who finished the tournament tied for sixth after recording his lowest score of the competition in round three.

Carlon shot a three under, 68 on the day to bring his combined total to a four under, 209. The senior improved five spots on the leaderboard to finish just three strokes out of first place. Carlon led the competition in birdies with 15 after carding five in round one, six in round two and four in round three. In addition, his par-5 scoring average of 4.56 (-4) tied for third overall.

Carlon’s sixth-place NCAA Regional finish marks his fifth top-10 finish of the season and ninth top-25 finish.

Freshman Sam Choi improved six spots on the leaderboard over the course of the tournament as he finished in a tie for 22nd after registering back-to-back scores of 70 (-1) in the second and third rounds to bring his three-round total to 215 (+2). The freshman led the team in pars with 37 after notching 15 in round three and he carded eight birdies over his three rounds of work.

Sophomore and 2019 Mountain West Champion Galven Green also posted his best score of the tournament in round three as he shot three over, 74 to finish tied for 59th with a total of 225 (+12).

While Carlon, Sam Choi and Green competed in all three rounds of the competition, redshirt-sophomore Ross Sinclair, freshman Ignacio Arcaya and freshman Roy Choi each represented the Lobos in two rounds of the competition.

On the tournament, Sinclair competed in the first two rounds as he shot an eight over, 79 in round one and a six over, 77 in round two. Arcaya saw action in the second and third rounds, registering a 77 (+6) and a 76 (+5) in each round, respectively, while Roy Choi competed in the first and third rounds shooting a 79 (+8) in round one and 78 (+7) in round three.

As a team, UNM posted its best score of the tournament in round three with a four over, 288 to add to its three-round total of 881 (+29). New Mexico finished just three strokes behind 11th-place Arkansas State and four strokes away from 10th-place Southern Illinois. The squad came in fourth in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.64 (-16) and its 44 birdies across the tournament was just eight shy of the tournament leader (52).

It was No. 1-seed Oklahoma State which took home first place at the Louisville Regional as it shot seven under, 277 on the day to jump ahead of second-place Auburn and finish 14 under, 838 on the tournament. Auburn recorded a five over, 289 in round three to bring its three-round score to a 10 under, 842, dropping the squad to second place after holding first over the first two rounds of action. Baylor clinched third place with a team score of seven under, 845 as it finished 14 strokes ahead of fourth-place Louisville.  

The top five teams and the top individual not on those teams from each of the six regional competitions are set to advance to the finals on May 24-29 at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas where the team and individual medalist titles will be decided. From the Louisville Regional, participating squads will be Oklahoma State, Auburn, Baylor, Louisville and North Florida while the individual will be Tripp Kinney from Iowa State.
