Dünninger in Third After Day One of MW Decathlon

FRESNO, Calif.—
  University of New Mexico sophomore Camillo Dünninger started off the first day of the  Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a strong showing, sitting in third in the men’s decathlon through the first five events.

Dünninger totaled 3642 points on the day, with his highest point total coming in the long jump and even led the competition with one event remaining.

The Germany native gained momentum as the events went along, starting the day in fifth after running 11.27 in the 100-meter dash for 801 points. Dünninger gained three positions in the long jump with 816 points, jumping an event-best 23-00.00 (7.01m) on his second attempt. The closest competitor jumped 22-4.25 (6.81m) and 769 points in comparison.

The Lobo maintained his second-place standing in the shot put, adding 624 points with a best throw of 40-4.0 (12.29m), also occurring on his second attempt.

On the second-to-last event of the opening day, Dünninger moved in to first following the high jump after clearing 6-1.50 (1.87m) for 687 more points to his overall total. Dünninger cleared every bar that he attempted on his first attempt before getting tripped up on the 1.90m height.

However, the Lobo slipped in the standings in the final event, the 400-meter dash, with his time of 52.24, earning 714 points.

Dünninger sits just 11 points out of second place, held by Colorado State’s Nick Kravec, and 71 points out of first, currently held by Hunter Powell of Colorado State.

The decathlon will resume with the final five events on Thursday at 5 p.m. MT before the men’s and women’s 10,000-meters begins. The Lobos have two entries in the women’s 10,000-meters in Johanna Briscoe and Weini Kelati, set to start at 10:30 p.m. MT.
