UNM Falls to UTEP

O'GradyO'Grady

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Cameryn O’Grady and Bailey Klitzke each recorded a hit for The University of New Mexico softball team on Tuesday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field with Klitzke driving in O’Grady for the lone UNM run as the Lobos fell 7-1 to UTEP.

It was the second time in the game that O’Grady reached base as the junior shortstop drew a walk to lead off the second. D’Andra DeFlora was the only other batter to reach base after being issued a walk in the third, as UNM was unable to get to starting pitcher Kira McKechnie.

Starting in the circle for the Lobos was left-hander Kiana Spencer, who threw 57 pitches through 6.0 innings of work, with 44 going for strikes. However, the Miners got out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and would add on four runs in the top of the sixth on 10 hits to hand Spencer the loss.

Klitzke came in to pitch the final inning of play, throwing six strikes on 11 total pitches while facing the minimum.

UNM was held hitless until the bottom of the seventh, with O’Grady breaking up the no-hit bid on a double to right center for her team-high 13th double of the season. Lauren Wilmert flied out to center and O’Grady tagged to third on the play. Klitzke followed that up with a single to left field to score O’Grady from third but ran herself into an out to end the game. However, with the hit, Klitzke extended her hit streak to four games.

The Lobos are off until April 18, when UNM hosts Boise State for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday.
