SAN JOSE, Calif. – The offense for the University of New Mexico baseball team was held in check in the series finale on Sunday afternoon as the Lobos were limited to one run on three hits in a 5-1 loss against San Jose State.
The Spartans (17-15, 11-4 MW), who completed the sweep of the Lobos in Sunday’s game, continue to separate themselves in the league standings as well as they are now 11-4. For the Lobos (15-17, 6-9 MW), the weekend sweep in conference play is their first suffered since their trip to San Jose a year ago.
While the end-result turned out to be a difficult offensive game for the Lobos, that was not the indication early in the game on Sunday as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The run for the Lobos in that inning came across as the Lobos put together a two-out rally that was started by Jared Mang beating out an infield single to the pitcher.
Mang then stole second to get into scoring position. A walk to Tyler Kelly extended the inning for Tanner Baker. Baker then ripped a RBI single to right field to score Mang.
That modest 1-0 lead would stand up until the fourth inning as Sunday starter Drew Gillespie was perfect on the mound for the Lobos through the first three innings. However, during that time, the Lobo offense was also being shutdown as they only had a one-out walk since the first inning.
The Spartans eventually got to Gillespie in the fourth and pushed across a run to tie the game at one-all. An inning later, the Spartans struck for three runs on four hits to go ahead of the Lobos and take a 4-1 lead.
The final tally for the Spartans came in the seventh inning off of reliever Malachi Emond.
In the top of the ninth, the Lobos put their first runner on base since the second inning as Mang singled to left field with one out. A groundball double play followed, however to end the game.
The Lobos will now return home for a seven-game homestand beginning Friday, April 12 against Nevada.
